Euro Stars: a sip of Europe in Subi

Food and wine writer, Sloane Carvell (@crumbs_and_corks) does the continental, and finds Subi has plenty to offer Euro-philes in search of  a chic tipple or two.

Subiaco has, perhaps, surprisingly a multicultural dining scene and plenty of options when it comes to exploring a little of Europe without leaving the state. Ahead of UnWined Subiaco, premium food and wine festival, Sloane explores some of the cosmopolitan options in Subi to enjoy a sip of Europe without the airfare.

Dilly Dally

With an Italian-inspired menu focusing on pizzas and share plates, it’s the perfect spot for a sneaky drink and snack or a big Sunday lunch. The wine list is heavy on Italian stallions, so this is the place to explore the best of their robust greats like chianti, barbera and nebbiolo. Chianti is made predominantly with the sangiovese grape and is sometimes blended with other varieties, it smells and tastes like you’d imagine an afternoon on the streets of Napoli would and is the perfect pizza wine. Its bright sour cherry and savoury notes and high acidity make it THE perfect match to stand up to tomato-based sauces in pasta and on pizzas.

Petite Mort

Petite Mort serves up French cuisine and is dedicated to degustation. Its wine list includes French and Australian wines, however it’s a must-visit for Champagne. With showstoppers like the fifth generation Champagne producer Veuve Fourny & Fils on the wine list, you’ll feel like you’re dining in 6th Arrondissement with views of Le Tour Eiffel. There are also cheeky aperitifs like a Kir Royale for that extra je ne sais quoi.

Bistro Felix

If you’ve got a penchant for modern European dishes produced with flair, Bistro Felix should be on your radar. With spring in the air, you might like to start with a Pimms Potion or Negroni from their cocktail list in the sunshine on the verandah. Dining en plein air (that’s outside to you and me) couldn’t be more cosmopolitan and we’re all for it. With a varied Mediterranean and Australian wine list why not move on to their beef tartare or chicken liver parfait and crisps, washed down with a flinty French chablis, or a grenache blend rosé from Rioja in Spain. The world is your oyster, it turns out, without leaving 6008.

Refuge Small Bar

The ‘little bar that could’ should be Refuge’s alter-ego. Its perhaps surprisingly Euro-focused wine list includes drops from Veneto and Piedmont in Italy’s lush north as well as a crisp rose from Aix-en-Provence. There is a zesty Prosecco again from the Veneto region, or if you’re really pushing the bateau out, a bottle of Carnard Duchene Cuvee Leonie for $85 will hit the right spot. Beer lovers with a penchant for something altogether more sophisticated than a can of VB won’t be disappointed either. There’s a Belgian brew – Geuze Mariage Parfait Lambic – from Lambeek, giving the type of beer its name.  Or for something really unusual and fruity, try the La Sirene Biere De Cerise - it’s blended from French oak barriques using whole cherries.
