Black Gold: Our Favourite Subiaco Coffee Spots

Need an early morning caffeine hit? Or perhaps a percolated pick-me-up at around the 3pm mark? Grab your keep-cup and have no fear - when it comes to the hottest coffee spots in town, we’ve got your back.

Boucla

When Subi residents think of a happening cafe, their minds usually turn to local stalwart Boucla. A Subi institution that’s been around for years, its quirky interior has a relaxed boho vibe that doesn’t feel at all try-hard.
There are also plenty of Greek and other Mediterranean goodies to munch on, but let’s face it - if you’re reading this list then you’re here for the caffeine. Boucla has its very own custom espresso blend ably dreamed up by the good folk at Left Field Coffee Roasters.

Team it with a monster slab of caramelised pear cake with a dollop of whipped cream and all of your coffee ‘n’ cake dreams will come true, because sugar+fat+carbs+caffeine=happiness, and you can’t argue with maths!

Brew-Ha The Ritual

Boy do these guys & gals know how to whip up an awesome coffee! The Brew-Ha gang worship any and all things to do with the roasted bean, which means that you’ll end up with a brew that’s high on quality, flavour, aroma and overall deliciousness. They’re also super kid and cyclist friendly too.

As the name suggests, they’re all about the coffee (and tea) ritual, periodically roasting their own coffee beans to bring their customers closer to the whole coffee experience. Brew-Ha has a huge range of international blends available, from Africa and Asia to Latin-America, as well as organic coffees.

We’ve also been told raw green coffee beans will be available shortly, so soon you can conduct your very own own roasting ritual in the comfort of your own home. We can’t wait!

Karibu Cafe

If you’re looking for a coffee spot that’s a little more grass-roots, then this is bound to tick a few of your boxes. These guys are super-passionate about their ketogenics, a popular low-carb, high-fat eating philosophy, and they don’t mind shouting about it from the rooftops either.

The diet, now used as a weight-loss program, has been around since the 1920s, when it was originally used to treat epilepsy. Karibu has got a great range of vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free meals and snacks in line with the ketogenic lifestyle. But let’s not get too sidetracked - it’s all about the coffee after all.

With a massive following, ‘keto’ (ketogenic) coffee is what Karibu specialise in: we’re talking original one-of-a-kind blends such as the Keto BOSS, Keto on Ghee and Keto Mocha. Feel like a Magik Keto? That’s one coffee with medicinal mushrooms, MCT oil and grass-fed butter coming right up. If keto coffee doesn’t sound like your bag, don’t fret - they do regular coffees and teas as well.

Architects and Heroes

Ranked in the top ten coffee spots in the entire city by coffee nerd website beanhunter.com.au for the last five years running, it’d be remiss of us not to include local heavyweight Architects and Heroes in our list of top local coffee spots.

With espresso based drinks, cold brew, batch brew and pour-over beverages on offer featuring a range of different single origins and blends, this is the place to head if you want to indulge your inner coffee geek.

They also supplement this fine drink selection with some delicious baked goods, bagels and a solid a la carte menu of cafe classics with an upmarket twist, so there’s a lot more than just great coffee on offer to keep you coming back time and time again.
