Plan The Perfect Picnic in Subi!
What better way to capitalise on this amazing run of clear skies, cool breezes and warm nights than by stocking up on some gorgeous grub, divine drinks and heading out to some of the best picnic places Subi has to offer.
We really are spoilt for choice around Subiaco, as far as scenic spots are concerned. We thought we’d help narrow it down for you by offering up a handful of our favourite outdoor arcadias to visit. But first, let’s stop in at some of the amazing local delis and food shops, so we can fill up the baskets.
First stop, the picnic basket fillers;
Authentic artisan organic sourdough loaves handcrafted for over 72 hours. This is the calling card of the baking virtuosities over at Sorganic on Rokeby Road. Their base loaves are made with only a handful of humble ingredients; organic flour, filtered water, 30-year sourdough starter, and sea salt. Grab one of their signature fruit loaves filled with figs, apricots, dates and sultanas and treat yo’self to one of their amazing golden smoothies too.
You’re going to want some cheese to go with that delicious fruit loaf, and the walk-in fromagerie at Simon Johnson’s has more cheese than the mind can imagine. We currently can’t get enough of the Holden Farm Dairy Clothbound Cheddar and Holy Goat’s benchmark cheese: La Luna Ring. Why not pick up a packet of the MØR Cornmeal and Poppy Seed Snap Crackers while you’re at it?
The dream child of super passionate chefs, Paolo and Aimee Button; Urban Soul Foods was born from their desire to create the ultimate in Mediterranean and European style cuisine using 100% natural ingredients. You could easily fill an entire picnic basket with selections from their extensive menu alone, but we’re going to restrict ourselves to some of their mini tarts on this particular trip. We think a few chocolate pastry maple nut and vanilla pastry almond frangipane tarts will suffice. Oh, throw in a couple of custard and plum crumble slices as well then. YOLO!
Now, for the picnic spots;
Mueller Park was established in the early 1900s and has become a favoured outdoor destination in Subi for locals and visitors alike. Mueller is an off-lead dog park, so canine companions are encouraged to run wild while you enjoy a bite to eat under the shade of one of Mueller’s many tall trees. This park also has a playground, toilet facilities, drinking water taps, barbecue spots and they even take bookings as well.
Perfect for a child-friendly picnic spot, the Theatre Gardens offer an outdoor play space that encourages explorations and investigations into nature. The picnic and play spot on Bagot Road offers exciting and engaging features, such as basket swings, rope walks, balancing stilts, boulder climbing, water and sand pits, and even a puppet theatre!! Forget the kids, where can we sign up!?
One of the most beautiful parks in all of Subiaco - nay, Perth! – the Subi Common is a sublime spot to kick back, relax and let all of life’s troubles just melt away. Whether you feel like gazing at the gorgeous water feature and its accompanying water ways, taking a stroll across the Common’s immaculate manicured lawns, or just reclining under a tree and digging into your picnic basket full of gourmet treats, Subiaco Common has it all. Except for a public toilet. Just something you may want to keep in mind if you’ve been hitting the bubbles earlier in the day.
Why not dance in the sunlight at our Shenton Park fave? Lake Jualbup. We love planting ourselves on the grass at Lake Jualbup, gazing at the views, while the children enjoy the playground!
