Good Things Come In Small Packages: Wonderful Small Bars in Subiaco

Small bars might have only been around in Perth for less than a decade, but they’ve quickly made a huge impact on the way we eat and drinks. What these smaller-than-average venues lack in size they more than make up for in personality, uniqueness, delicious food offerings and quirky charm.

If you believe that good things come in small packages then make sure you check out this list of our favourite Subi small bars.

Bark

The self confessed “smallest small bar in town”, Bark is a venue dedicated to the “art of simple things done well and turning down the noise of day to day life.” Whether you’re chasing a cocktail featuring locally produced spirits, a tasty craft beer or a cheeky glass of vino, this cozy little spot is ideal if you’re looking for an intimate venue in which to unwind. They also have a small selection of bagels, a bagel burger and the “Bark Cheese Board” on offer if you’re feeling a little peckish.

New Normal

In the mood for some great food and drink but also want to be eco friendly and sustainable? Then New Normal is definitely for you. Every aspect of this on-trend community focused wine bar & kitchen has been designed to minimize waste and lower its carbon footprint.

By focusing on excellent local produce, seasonality and an approach that favours letting ingredients speak for themselves, New Normal have managed to achieve high levels of sustainability whilst delivering excellent drinks and outstanding share style dishes. When the weather’s good we love to take our drinks and nibbles up out to the rooftop terrace and watch the sunset

Refuge

A cracking range of rotating craft beers on tap, great cocktails, a solid wine list and an excellent selection of bar food and charcuterie - what more could you ask for in a small bar? Located smack bang next to the train station, we think that Refuge is the perfect place to drop in for a relaxed after work drink.. The Rolling Stones might have sung “gimme some shelter”, but given the choice we’d definitely take Refuge instead.

Juanita’s

A longtime Subi favourite known for oozing idiosyncratic European charm, Juanita’s has recently been been taken over by the folks behind hipster-leaning eatery Bivouac.

With the change of ownership freshening things up and giving the venue a new direction, it now offers visitors a fantastic selection of drinks and some great handmade bar food. Just be prepared to spend more time in this quirky little gem that you might expect - once you get comfortable it’s a very hard place to leave!
