WA Comedy Week lands in Subiaco this November, promising to bring all the funniest people from Australia’s funniest state together for a week of non-stop laughs.
From Monday 20 November to Thursday 23 November, the festival will take over iconic Subiaco venues BARK, Lums Wine Bar and Golden West Brewing Co with a wickedly talented lineup.
The week kicks off at BARK, Subiaco’s cozy neighbourhood shrine to all things Australiana, with Cam’s Big Dumb WA Gameshow. Multi-award-winning host Cameron McLaren has a huge night of fun and games in store for you, in the grand old tradition of gameshow favourites such as Blankety Blanks, Family Feud, The Newlywed Game and The Price is Right. Think a live comedy game show – with audience interaction, fantastic prizes and, of course, laughs. This free event has already booked out – but you can check the WA Comedy Week channels closer to the time to see if any last minute spots open up.
The perfect place for supporting locally grown talent, with its classic Aussie jaffles and friendly atmosphere, BARK is also hosting two more events on the program. The WA Fresh Comedy Showcase is a launching pad for the freshest new and emerging comedians that WA has to offer – and could be your chance to witness the next big household name in Australian comedy. BARK‘s wildly popular live music series Jazz & Shiraz is getting a comedic upgrade with an appearance from local lyrical legends “Whose Rhyme?” in a special one-off collab. Whether you’re a jazz aficionado, a wine lover, or simply a sucker for an entertaining night out, Jazz & Shiraz + Whose Rhyme? is the place to be. It’s currently booked out, but once again – keep your eyes peeled for any last minute releases.
If scathing wit and spicy stories are more your speed, stroll up to Lums Wine Bar for Gill Cordiner – Pinky Swears. WA’s favourite Scottish lass embodies the vibe of a wild aunty who always says just what you wish you could, and she’s full of bizarre stories, cheeky smiles and the perfect pinch of inappropriateness. Catch her upstairs at Lums for an hour of uncontrollable laughter and shockingly accurate insights about relationships, families and cheese.
Next up on the list at Lums is the Brits in WA – Comedy Showcase, hosted by WA’s own extraordinary ex-pat Andrew Silverwood. Split a bottle of summery pet nat and expect stitches in your sides as you enjoy a night of classic comedy from the British comedy heavyweights that now call Perth home. Featuring the talents of David Hughes (Writer for The Project), Andrew Silverwood (Fringe World Best Comedy), Grant Mushet (Fringe World Best Comedy) and Sarah Callaghan (Edinburgh Fringe), this best of British is not to be missed.
For a raucous girls night out, it’s hard to go past The Motherhood Comedy – Mums at Lums, a secret show from the stand-up comedy legends featuring new material never seen before. From dummies, dance mums and drinking to discovering middle age facial hair, this is a hilarious look into motherhood – raw, unfiltered and unforgettable.
Rounding out the Lums lineup is Macshane – The Freestyler, AKA your chance to deep dive into the mind of one of Australia’s finest freestyle rappers. Embark on a satirical journey through the many eras of rap music as you explore the styles, stereotypes and comical tropes of a genre that can (and often does) takes itself way too seriously. This highly interactive show will take your input to create a rap character and create hilarious live improvised rap songs, the likes of which you’ve never seen. It’s creativity fuelled by chaos – and will leave you fighting back tears of laughter.
Perhaps the crowning gem on the program is the WA Comedy Week All-Stars Showcase at Golden West Brewing Co on Thursday 23 November. With limited tickets remaining (and for good reason), this round up of undisputed WA Comedy Week legends is the perfect choice for those new to comedy – but also for those who’ve followed these all-stars from the start. It’s the show that proves once and for all that West does it best.
Whatever your tastes might be, WA Comedy Week has the experience for you. With a program that features everything from stand-up to satire, improv and music, there’s something to tickle every fancy and put a stitch in every side. So gather your friends, chuck a message in the group chat, and plan that date night with a difference – it’s time to dine, drink and laugh local in Subiaco.
