Hello shiny New Year! 2024 is here with 366 days (for the leap year), 52 weeks and 12 months of whatever you wish to do and whoever you wish to be. As we enter these unfilled pages of our story, hopefully with wonder and curiosity, we consulted some Subiaco experts on how we can create an epic year supported by our wellbeing practices.
Health and fitness goals are known to top the New Year’s resolution charts, and for good reason. A healthy body and mind trickle into most aspects of our lives and make them better, too. Many of us use this time of year to make grandiose statements like “run a marathon” or “lose 10 kilograms”, which might be worthy aspirations, but without daily practice, they can fall flat. Pressed Earth Juices co-owner Zoe Kelsey (@pressed_earth) says health is a ‘long game’ for her which is achieved with daily habits practised with consistency.
“For me, to move every day is number one, especially in the outdoors or in the company of others because of the impact it has on my physical and mental health, and overall sense of wellbeing,” Zoe says.
“I go to the gym with my husband Luke and the same small group. I practise yoga, walk or ride to school with the kids – all of it impacts everything else, it reduces stress, improves my focus and mood, my confidence. I eat better, sleep better!”
Eating and sleeping better over the summer is a huge achievement in itself, with end-of-year parties, the festive season and extended holiday period all throwing routine out the window.
“Sometimes days blur past and we forget when we last ate a quality vegetable or piece of fruit – unless orange in my Aperol counts!” Zoe says, laughing.
“Most mornings, I make a green smoothie using Pressed Earth’s all veggie Greens Five juice and add coconut yoghurt, banana, chia seeds, spinach and maybe protein powder – it gives me all the “my-body-is-a-temple” vibes – and over summer, it becomes even more important to start my day this way.”
Temple Lane owner and yoga teacher Nicola Garcia (@temple__lane) agrees these smaller actions are the perfect way to support our good intentions that come with New Year resolutions.
“A lot of our resolutions can be very vague like ‘lose weight’, but the brain loves a plan, so I break it down to actionable goals like three smoothies a week for breakfast, three veggie-based soups a week and book an exercise class with a friend,” Nicola says.
“On top of that, make sure you know why you’re doing it – the most important thing is to set your goal with kindness and love for yourself because you’re worth the effort, time and money to feel fantastic.”
In between the Aperol Spritzes of the summer season, Zoe suggests visualising how you want life to look in 2024 with lots of detail. Once you know the specifics, set that dream life into motion today and make time for what’s important to you.
