Perth International Jazz Festival Launches the Subiaco Winter Jazz Trail

Explore the sounds of live jazz with free pop-up performances during the Subiaco Winter Jazz Trail.

This August, Subiaco will come alive with the sounds of jazz as the Perth International Jazz Festival and See Subiaco present the inaugural Subiaco Winter Jazz Trail – a free weekend of live music celebrating local artists, vibrant businesses and community connection.

Running across Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 August, the trail will feature 12 free performances in venues and public spaces throughout Subi. Transforming everyday places into intimate performance venues, the trail showcases the breadth of Western Australia’s thriving jazz scene like you’ve never seen it before.

Festival Director Dr Mace Francis said the trail reflects the Festival’s commitment to bringing exceptional live music into the community.

“The Subiaco Winter Jazz Trail is about creating moments of discovery. Whether you’re a dedicated jazz lover or simply enjoying a weekend in Subiaco, you’ll be able to stumble upon incredible live performances in unexpected places while supporting local businesses and experiencing everything the precinct has to offer.”

Beginning on Saturday 15 August at our beloved Subi Farmers Market, emerging WAAPA talents Nahler & Bates Duet will ease audiences into the weekend before performances continue throughout the afternoon at SAVA ART Gallery in Shenton Park, where Al’s Pals bring their exceptional contemporary sound to one of Perth’s most distinctive creative spaces.

The music then spills into the streets as The 950 Marching Band, led by PIJF Festival Director Dr Mace Francis, brings New Orleans energy to Subi Square. Grab a pastry from Layers Bakery before heading up to Bar Amelie to hear rising vocalist Sofie Kerr Duo, and enjoy the soaring acoustics of St Andrew’s Church with Stepping Stones Organ Duo.

Saturday evening continues with award-winning performers Harry Mitchell & Allira Wilson at the beautifully restored Embassy by Devlin’s, before Danish-born guitarist Kristian Borring Trio closes the night with contemporary jazz at Quello Bar.

Sunday opens with the Victoria Newton Trio bringing Brazilian rhythms and jazz standards to Subiaco’s Postal Walk, before the high-energy Junkadelic Brass Band once again fills Subi Square with infectious New Orleans-inspired grooves.

The afternoon continues with the Louis Rebeiro Trio at the Subiaco Hotel, the Lachlan Glover Duo at Mossenson Galleries, and the Hanna Kim Trio at FOUND. Subiaco, where the weekend comes to a triumphant close.

Spend the weekend discovering cafés, restaurants, galleries, breweries and everything in between – with every performance offering a completely unique setting and a different way to experience live jazz.
