Ever wondered what goes into transforming a humble car park wall into a work of art? Over Subi Spritz weekend, you can meet the artist and hear the story — spritz in hand.
Artist Leanne Bray will be joining Oh Hey WA‘s Subi Spritz Street Art Tour on Friday 27th March at 5.45pm, offering a special behind-the-scenes Q&A about her new mural in Rowland Street Carpark, next to Cherubino City Cellar (behind Dallimores Homewares and Deliso). The new artwork will take shape over the weeks leading up to Subi Spritz weekend.
The mural will occupy a particularly challenging site, with an unusual arrangement of windows and doors dominating the wall. Leanne’s signature geometric design approach cleverly unifies these architectural quirks, transforming the space into a cohesive and visually engaging artwork.
Leanne will offer some insights into her inspiration, sharing how the fiery red and soft purple colours are drawn from the poinciana and jacaranda blooms that brighten the car park throughout the year. Her studio practice informs this large-scale public work, which also features playful twists echoing the shapes of spaghetti, as a nod to the local area’s Italian history and the many opportunities to sample Italian cuisine nearby.
This street art tour is part of the Subi Spritz weekend (26-29 March), where Subiaco transforms into your own little slice of Southern Europe. A guided art walk finishing with a spritz at a pop-up bar – this is la dolce vita.
